"Person centred support "

About: Raigmore Hospital / Urology

(as a relative),

My dad has recently been diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer and I just wanted to share the very positive experience we had despite it being a very stressful time and still is.

I went with my dad to the urology department in Raigmore hospital for his first appiontment to discuss options for his future treatment. Firstly the timing of my dad receiving his appointment was really good, just over a week, the letter encouraged him to find out more information and to explore various websites. This helped a bit with preparing for the appointment.

I don't want to ramble on too much but the factors that made this experience positive were: my dad was asked about what he thought and felt about the best treatment for him, the consultant and specialist nurse gave lots of time to listen (and they really listened), everything was explained and my dad's understanding of what was being discussed was consistently checked out. Fundamentally my dad felt he was very involved in the decisions made and felt very reassured about what is going to happen next. So I would just like to say thank you.

Dear KeJeh

I am sorry to hear that you have the worry of your dad being diagnosed with early stage prostrate cancer. But glad the staff in our department are providing you with support that you value. Being person centred is what we are striving to do for every person every time. But sometimes we fall short. Giving people the right information and making sure there are no surprises are all really important to help people cope. So it's really good of you to give us such positive feed-back which I will be pleased to share with colleagues.

They will be encouraged to know you are happy with how they have looked after you.

If there is anything at all you want to know more about the specialist nurse or a member of the team will be on hand to help.

Thanks again for getting in touch.
