"Short Stay Ward D5"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital

Anything else?

My mum had her third operation on the 17th April and she was not treated well. She was told not to eat after midnight as she would be having her op first thing in the morning, but didnt go down until 3pm, she wasnt offered water or toast and was starving. She was told it was an over night stay. When I rang the hospital I was told she could go home after her op, I explained that she had no one to look after her as we were expecting her in overnight so the nurse said she would find her a bed. I rang at 7pm and was told she "wanted" to go home. I again explained that she had no one at home to help her and home help were not coming until the Wednesday (she couldnt even undress herself) the nurse said she was insistant, she was never given the option and was never asked if she wanted to go home. I explained (for the third time) that she gets very confused after anaesthetic and she had no help at home, again the nurse said she wanted to go home and she would make sure she was ready for bed. I explained that my brother would call in to the hospital and check on her, but if she wasnt well enough he wouldnt be taking her home. When my brother got there she was fully dressed and sat in the waiting area he had no option other than to take her to an empty house. We had to arrange for my 21 year old Nephew to stay with her until proper help was available the next day. We had no one to help undress her and my brother had to do it. I was also told by the nurse that she hadnt an anaesthetic, yet my mum swears she did. She has an infection in her arm and is in great pain. I went to her pre op appointment and explained the importance of requiring care when she leaves the hopsital, which was written down and she assured me that she would be well cared for. People say the NHS get a rough deal, yet you treat patients so poorly. My mum is due to have a second operation, but I will never allow her to go back to Stepping Hill.
