I opted to go this hospital because the surgeons come highly recommended. The entire pre op went very and I was very impressed. Post operation care on wensleydale ward was abysmal because there seemed to be no organization, example I would expect that being attached to various monitors which means I cannot just hobble out of bed to use the lavatory, so when I pressed the buzzer no body came for quite a long time or in some case not at all. There were three lavatories the nearest to our unit, only one was suitable for disabled patient and was out of order since the March 2013 and I was in the unit in April 2013 and when I left the unit on the 11April the lavatory was still not repaired. One of the other lavatories was blocked during my stay which meant there was only one lavatory in use shared between men and women. I think these three lavatories were also used by the adjacent bed unit. These lavatories are fitted with a high seat for people who have had hip & Knee surgery, when I did go in to use the lavatory I found the raised seat were often removed and placed on the floor and when I asked a staff member regarding this I was advised it had probably been removed by another staff member who had not bothered to put it back. You would expect on the next morning to be offered the means to have a wash, only one day out of four was I offered to have a wash, I had to keep myself clean using wet wipes, this is simply not good enough, one expects to be kept clean or given the means to be kept clean comfortable. It seems to me that the care support staffs were not given adequate training or a proper routine to follow. I saw one them trying to make a bed, and she seemed to not know how to do this. I asked this care support team member and she told me she had only started that week and was supposed to be working with a mentor but they were off all week. She clearly had not been given any training. I feel that the nurses are no longer nursing in the way I was trained in the 1960’s and much of the work is being done by care support staff but they still need to be trained properly and their should be a set daily routine that they follow. If patient care comfort and dignity is to be maintained care support staff must be trained and organized properly, of which I saw neither. Some of the care support staff were clearly nice women but did not seem to have any training or organization which is not fair to patients or them.
