I visited a different hospital after a slip on ankle and had a xray taken an was told at the time I had an all clear as no breaks. Fortunately someone else reviews the xray's an found I had broken my talar dome an booked me into Colchester fractures (been told due to where break is, it is often missed). Luckily for me the doctor reviewed my xray an saw the seriousness of the injury an put me in for an MRI scan at Colchester general and supplied me with crutches/moon boot and referred me to foot specialist.

Got an appointment letter for the MRI for the following week and got my results 4 weeks after with my first meeting with the doctor, but due to the weather and amount of people in the waiting room with broken limbs, it was obviously a busy time of year.

On reviewing the MRI was told that I would require surgery due to the size and nature of the break. Everything was clearly explained such as possible fixes, dangers, future problems etc and left with a good feeling that i'd be able to walk normally again.

Had the pre admission checks the following week with the various departments and didn't have to wait around for anything and each person I saw explained everything they were doing and why.

To my surprise I was fitted in for the operation a week later as I had been put on the doctor's urgent list. I had panicked about getting back to work/walking again before the pre admission so had started to look at the private healthcare route. But due to my insurers having a mix up I had to wait 2.5wks for the initial Private HC consultation only to be referred to another doctor, due to this the NHS turned out quicker.

Operation day I was in Copford ward and Nurses were all happy, helpful and ward was clean. On the way to the anaesthetic I wasn't far off wheeling myself out the exit doors due to nerves, but the nurse that took me in put me at ease and took my mind off what was about to come.

Was sick while I was under so upon waking up after op I was transferred to Gt Tey ward to be monitored, again ward was clean and I was regularly checked on. The meals aren't going to win any Michelin stars but no one expects it too an was good enough.

Overall I've had a very pleasant experience with the care given from the doctors, nurses and anyone else involved and can't thank the doctor enough for the foot fix and getting me in so quickly.

My only negative throughout the experience was that my Discharge summary letter and Doctor stated that at 14days I would require a wound check but I only received a 6wk appointment and had to call to get the 14day booked (now 19day) as had been overlooked.
