"Very disappointing"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

Anything else?

This is an add on to my telephone post yesterday titled 'Both disappointing and a waste of time'. I do not feel that the original post adequately expressed my point of view. I was scheduled for a cataract operation on right eye on Monday, had the pre op medication only for it to be cancelled when I saw the doctor who was to perform the operation. The original post makes it look as though it was cancelled due to a problem in my left eye which is not completely accurate. Yes I did have a problem in my left eye which was treated by A & E originally last Easter Saturday and followed up by the emergency eye department the following Thursday. At that appointment I was told that the problem I had was settling down nicely and some of the medication was subsequently stopped and other meds to be gradually reduced. I said that I was due a cataract op on right eye by 23 April and was led to believe that the problem in my left eye would not be an obstacle to that. My follow up for my left eye is on 29 May. At my cataract op I was told that the eye pressure was normal and no cells were present, in other words the original problem I had in left eye had cleared up, so I do not feel it was necessary to cancel my cataract operation. It had taken six months to get this far and now I am back in limbo with no idea when I will get the cataract operation, and feel it has been a waste of both mine and valuable NHS time. The doctor who was to perform the cataract op did not have my notes relating to left eye problem and could only make a judgment on what I tried to explain both for the problem and medication given and unfortunately I could not remember some of the medication since I naturally thought it would all be available in my notes for the doctor to see.

Lastly I just want to say apart from this experience I have nothing but praise for the staff and the treatment I have previously received from the QA eye department.
