"The different needs of patients"

About: Blackpool Victoria Hospital / Parkwood inpatient unit

(as the patient),

It’s keeping me safe – just doing what it’s supposed to do. That’s all.

Things are more organised than they used to be. It feels like two groups of people here – depression and schizophrenia. I’d like to be quiet and on my own but there’s so much noise and disruption from those people seeing and hearing things and it doesn't help me to be around them. It would be better to separate by diagnosis.

You could also improve the food – tasteless and chips like rubber, vegetables like water, awful.

You could also improve understanding of eating disorders among staff.

They do need to improve communication and discuss in advance when you’re going to see people not just say ‘now’ or then not turn up.

And about it being unhelpful, it is wrong to put those needing quiet, calm atmosphere and environment with those who are loud and shouting because they’re seeing and hearing things because of their illness.

We have very different needs.

Thank you for recognising the improvements we are seeking to make to the service we provide. I am sorry you did not find the food very palatable and we have passed your observations on to the company who provide the food. We also have a system of internal inspections which include food tasting and any issues regards quality and quantity are taken up with the catering company.

We have also noted your suggestion regarding raising awareness of Eating Disorders within our clinical teams. We would usually seek specialist advice to support each individual service user need. We will also discuss this with the ward managers and clinical practitioners so all staff have a base line knowledge of the best way to support individuals with an eating disorder.

We have been working hard to improve our standard of communication with service users including trying to ensure that service users are aware of times of one-to-one sessions but clearly this is still work in progress and we are grateful for your feedback on this issue.

We have noted your observations regarding the variety of illnesses that are currently provided for on an acute admissions ward and the possible impact each group can have on the other.

Unfortunately at this time it is not possible to organise wards around diagnosis but we will remind the ward staff of the importance of being mindful of the impact the ward environment can have on different individuals with different problems.
