About: Derriford Hospital

Anything else?

I cannot comprehend the catalogue of errors concerning my father-in-law, in-fact the Consultant in question phoned my father-in law to apologize for the mistakes made during the past four months.

My father-in-law attended the hospital in January 2013 for tests concerning an aortic aneurism.Further appointment was made for 20th Feb for an operation ,this was sent in error and subsequently cancelled.

A phone call was made on 1st Feb to see why , and we were told that he needed further tests.

After 2 months two letters were sent with different dates for the 12th and 22nd of April for the same thing.

An appointment for 12th April was kept for a pre-assessment before operation.

My parents in-law ,not forgetting they are in their 70's had to spend 8 hours hanging around between tests at the hospital.

A date of May 2nd was mentioned to carry out the operation only if all the pre-assessment tests were ok.

Unfortunately they were unhappy about the ECG and suggested a cycle test to check heart function. The anaesthetist had a cycle in their room , they had to wait for another date of 25th for bike test and if ok the operation would be performed on 2nd of May .

On April 16th my father-in -law received a phone-call from the secretary saying that an operation would be performed on the next day!

We could not believe this as there was a problem with ECG and my father-in-law was taking anticoagulants.

There was obviously no communication between secretary and Consultant.

The secretary was very insistant ,but after further conversation the date was cancelled.

The consultant in question subsequently phoned up after clinic ,apologising and said to keep the appointment for the bicycle test .

They were told that another surgeon would be doing the operation as they were too busy.

So after 4 months of a complete cock-up we are still waiting , there was in fact no available theatre for that date It seems that when the operation is finally booked we will have to go through all the pre-assessment tests again.

When will it end ?

What about targets?

We are considering whether to take this further !

Names will be made available if requested

Good afternoon and thank you for your posting. I am sorry to read about the concerns described above in relation to your father in law's care and would welcome the opportunity to speak to you to see if there is anything we can do or whether we have your father in law's permission to speak to the team involved and ensure your family is clear about arrangements. I do hope you will feel able to contact me and my telephone number is 01752 439751.

Kind regards

Mary
