"Bad experience"

About: Bradford Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

In November my mother was admitted to Ward 4 as a dementia patient. She was diagnosed with pneumonia. They decided to put her on the Liverpool Pathway. They put in a catheter. After a couple of hours she was crying, saying that she needed to go to the toilet. We alerted one of the nurses about this. The nurse told us that she was a dementia patient and did not know what she was saying or wanted and was confused. The nurse came over and said there is nothing wrong, the catheter is there and there is nothing to do. She did not check her but said there was fluid in the bag so was OK. After an hour an a half with my mum still crying out wanting to go to the toilet my sister pulled away the bedsheet and the incontinence pad was fastened around her tightly which caused the catheter tube to be kinked. We alerted the same nurse. She came and had a look. She loosened the incontinence pad, saying it was tight, and within a couple of minutes the bag was full of urine, it filled up right to the top. We showed the nurse who apologized.

I contacted PALS about a day after this and they said they would speak to the ward. I rang up after she died a couple of days later and spoke to a hospital manager about the same thing and she took my contact details and said she would look into the matter and get back to me – they have not.
