This review applies specifically to the wonderful oncology unit where my husband was a frequent patient in both the day care ward and then latterly as a terminally ill patient who could not be treated at home due to the nature of his rare cancer. Not all patients have the luxury of being able to have the necessary full time nursing in their own home and there are times when there are insufficient beds at our excellent local hospice. The care at the Barrow in patient unit is outstanding by all involved , from cleaners to senior medical staff, my family cannot praise them enough or thank them sufficiently for all they did to help him in his final days. This was nursing at its absolute zenith and I speak as one from a family of consultants ,doctors and health visitors from other parts of the country. It would be a travesty if this department was lost to the area especially as it was mainly funded and equipped by public support . One wonders if the closure goes ahead if the funding will be returned to the donors?
I cannot fill in most of the information below as oncology is not listed. I have been a frequent visitor to many wards and departments over the past twelve years.
