"Some of the nursing staff kept ..."

About: Bristol Royal Infirmary

(as a relative),

What I liked

Some of the nursing staff kept us informed of what was happening. Some seemed genuinely concerned with the patient and wanted to give her the best treatment they could.

What could be improved

Communication between nurses. We were told we could bring food in by one nurse as the patient could not eat the hospital food another nurse threw the food away saying she couldn't have outside food. A nurse was VERY rude about the fact that we had bought food from Marks and Spencers, what this had to do with her I don't know, I found this very unprofessional. The patient asked to go to the toilet in the night and was told that 'she couldn't possibly want to go again already'. The patient then soilled herself. This was highly undignified and highly unprofessional. Another patient on the same ward was constantly crying out and making a repetatively loud noise. We were told that she would be moved in an hour, two days later she was still there! The patient went into hospital to be made well, she is now worse than when she went in and cannot wait until she can go home. I have found the whole experience highly distressing and I am very angry and upset. The patient is my Grandmother who is 93 years old and she does not deserve to be treated in this way. I understand that nurses are busy but there is no need to be rude. Surely their training teaches them to be caring towards patients and as a nurse I thought they would want patients to become better and to be restored to health. I can honestly say that this has not happened in this case.
