"What a shambles."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Anything else?

My wife was admitted to Will Adams ward on 3 April 2013. After arriving at the admissions and discharge lounge no one knew why my wife was being admitted. They had apparently lost the e mail from the consultant. My wife had to wait there for nearly 8 hours before finally being admitted to the ward. There was alot of phone calls, running around by staff to sort this out. During this time my wife was becoming extremely distressed as she has ME and was very tired. On arrival at the ward, once again there was a lack of communication as to why she was there. There was no food offered to her until she asked for it after only being offered a measly sandwich at 2pm. By then it was 8pm. i was appalled at the dirty floors, dirty toilets, disgusting smell of urine and faeces. My wife had two bins by her bed which were used to put soiled linen and goodness knows what else in them. Bins should not be next to patients beds.On the second day my wife asked to have a shower only to be told the shower was temperamental and there was probably no hot water, which there wasn`t. The place was extremely cold during the night and was told the boiler was broken. There was a total lack of communication between all the staff. Some of which spent most of the time gossipping about each other. Some beds took all day to be made. My wife eventually asked to be discharged even though she was not feeling at all well and was brought home in a worse condition than when she went in.The hygiene control, communication and respect of some nurses towards patients needs to be urgently addressed.i would not recommend this hospital to anyone and am concerned about the overall lack of hygiene and disorganisation. My wife is very unwell still and her needs were not met.

I am sorry to hear about your experience of using the Trust's services during your wife's admission. Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. You raise a number of issues which would be best discussed with you directly. My understanding is that you did raise some of these concerns with ward staff at the time, but I am happy to discuss and look into matters with you further. Please contact:
