"Delays in bringing dehydrated patient water"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My relative was admitted to the RVH Belfast on in mid March with severe dehydration caused by gastroenteritis.

She had been informed that the dehydration had led to kidney damage.

She was started on intravenous fluids and encouraged to drink as much as possible.

She repeatedly asked for a jug of water. The nurses always said they would get one but it never materialised.

Eventually a nurse going off duty went to the shop and bought her a bottle of water.

Do the wards no longer have a kitchen from where staff can give a patient one of the basic requirements of life, water?

The following day she again asked repeatedly for a jug of water, she eventually did get a jug of water but no glass.

Had she not got the empty bottle from the previous night to pour the water into, she would have had to drink it from the jug.

On that same evening, staff forgot to give her any dinner.

On the following day the same pattern was repeated, she was discharged without ever having the privilege of a glass from which to drink from.

This is the 21st century but in the Royal Victoria Hospital she was denied this basic human right, despite suffering dehydration and resulting kidney damage.
