"disappointed with drop in services"

About: Locala Community Partnerships CIC / Kirklees Sexual Health

(as the patient),

I use the drop in service to get my contraceptive pill. I have used this service for over three years and found it very helpful over these years. However since I started working full time I could only get to one of the drop in's that’s on a Saturday morning.

Unfortunately I ran out of pills and was away on the weekend so I couldn’t make the drop in on the weekend as normal. I looked online when I got home and found what I thought was the drop in that finished at 5pm. So on Tuesday I had arranged to finish work early so then I be able to make the drop in.

When I got there the lady on reception informed me that the clinic finished at 4. 30 and then the times I had found online were in fact for a different drop in service in the building. I told her of my situation and she said that there was nothing that could be done.

On the following Saturday I arrived at the clinic at 10. 20am (drop in is 10. 15 - 12) I went to reception as normal to be told that there was only one nurse and that she was fully booked till 12. 30pm. Why was there only one nurse? The receptionist was understanding and very apologetic but yet again I had to walk away without any pills.

I personally think that all the drop in sessions that are for all ages are not accessible for the full time workers like myself. I think that there should be longer hours so that people in my position can have better access to sexual health and family planning services. I also think that having one nurse on a Saturday is completely ridiculous as I have been to the Saturday morning drop in sessions and they get busy so why on one of the busiest mornings was there only one nurse?

I have never been so disappointed with these services and I hope that something changes.

Hi hanban181

Thank you for taking the time to tell your story on Patient Opinion and I'm sorry that you were disappointed with your experience of the drop in service. I shared your story with Dr Shirley Tabner, Clinical Lead for Contraception and Sexual Health, who would like to issue the following response:

"Thank you very much for taking the time to leave details of your experience on Patient Opinion and may I apologise for your poor experience. Locala uses the feedback provide by patients/clients to inform future service delivery and may I assure you that we will be using yours when we formally review our service in May. We do plan to look at improving access, which includes looking at drop-in times, staffing levels and working more flexibly according to demand".

It would be very useful if you could email our enquiry line with the details of the website you got the details of the "drop in" from so that we can ensure these are clear for others in future. enquiry@locala-cic.nhs.uk

Thanks

Gemma
