About: Birmingham Dental Hospital

Anything else?

Was referred by dentist almost 1 month ago due to pain in wisdom tooth that has not subsided. My dentist was unable to pull the tooth as it is broken down. I followed up last week and was told I would not here anything for 3 weeks. I went to visit my dentist again today due to the unbearable pain and he suggested I take the referral in personally. I contacted Birmingham Dental Hospital again today and was told they had no record of my referral. I asked can I scan and email it and they suggested I bring it by hand. I caught a bus and then taxi just to be told thank you and we will send you something in 5 weeks. I informed the nurse that it was an emergency and my referral even stated that but I was then told there was nothing they could do. They suggested I go back to my dentist for pain medication. Am I supposed to live on pain medication for the next 5 weeks? Are there no special circumstances for emergencies?

I am sorry you have experienced difficulties with being referred to Birmingham Dental Hospital and for the inconvenience of having to hand-deliver your referral to the hospital. It is not possible to fully explain your individual experience without more details; however it is likely that when you spoke with the duty nurse, they will have made an assessment of your clinical presentation and given you advice and discussed the options available to you based on their clinical judgment. I do accept how frustrating and upsetting it would have been to be advised to return to your own dentist for pain management whilst waiting for an appointment. All patients who attend without an appointment will be assessed to check whether urgent dental treatment is required and patients are advised of the options available to them. If you would like to speak to us further about your experience, or the decision made, please contact Alison Last, Associate Director of Patient Experience by email: alison.last@bhamcommunity.nhs.uk or phone 0121 466 7128.
