My 88year old mother was admitted to A&E on a Friday night recently with low blood pressure and complaining of a painful elbow and swollen lower arm. After a considerable waiting time she was seen by A&E staff who put her on an intravenous fluid drip and then packed her off to a medical assessment ward. The undiagnosed infection turned into septicemia and still not monitored turned into septic shock. Her internal organs were severely compromised and she slipped into a coma and died late the next day. At no time did the A&E doctor treating my mother communicate to use what his diagnosis was and how he was treating her.The only time antibiotics were administered was after an intensive care doctor saw my mother late the following morning and advised us that all her symptoms indicated an infection but at this time she was beyond saving as the infection had damaged her major organs and they would close down and her heart would stop. In less than one day in the care of the Royal United Hospital A&E my mother went from admission with a swollen arm to her death .
