After a blood test by my GP, Dr Garner at Moira Park Surgery during a routine visit on the morning in February 2013 I was called back to the surgery that evening by Dr Mitchell of the practice as my blood glucose levels were extremely high (30+) she arranged there and then that the following morning I would attend the Metabolic Unit at the Western General Hospital where I would see Dr Anna Dover.
At the hospital I received excellent attention and had all numerous tests done, there were no delays or hanging around. Results from blood tests were back in under an hour and a treatment plan was devised and agreed with me. The information I needed was given to me in a way I totally understood by Dr Dover and specialist diabetes nurse Jacqui Charlton and the probable reason for the onset explained. It was also explained that it was unusual for someone of my age to get Type 1 without having had any previous history of diabetes. I left the hospital with everything I needed.
The follow up treatment has been excellent with several visits to ensure my blood glucose levels were reducing to an acceptable level. I have also received regular phone calls from staff at the unit to ensure I was coping well.
Everyone from GP's, Consultants, Nurses, Ophthalmologist, Lab Staff and Receptionists all deserve praise for the way my treatment was delivered.
An obviously stressful time was made as easy as possible by the dedicated health professionals involved.
