"Moorfield A&E is shockingly badly organised"

About: Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road Campus)

Anything else?

Lets get this out of the way - The staff all did a pretty good job. But Moorfield's A&E dept is organised chaos. I went there last week and was there for over 4 hours in total. The place is so badly organised. This is supposed to be the best known eye hospital in the UK BUT they can't even find a decent location to stick up an eye examination chart.

They've placed the chart on a wall that is also a corridor for staff. so when you're trying to take a basic eye exam you have about 10 members of staff walking back and forth. I've never in my life had to take an eye exam with moving objects constantly walking back and forth. It delays the procedure by about 2 minutes. Now factor in they do this test to all patients and there see some 7,000 patients a month 2 x 7000 = 14,000 minutes wasted or 233 hours a month.

Eventually you're taken to a 2nd waiting room, where you have a giant screen TV and the only information it displays is next to useless. You have no idea where you are in the queue to be seen. You're scared to go to the toilet in case you miss your turn. You have no idea if there is anywhere to get food or drink.

When you do eventually get to see the doctor you find out the equipment he has to use is something out of world war 2. I've had my eyes examined at my local A&E five years ago and what they had then was far more modern. And even my local high street optician has more modern equipment. My doctor had to hold up some lens with his hand infront of my eye and 3 times I almost got poked in the eye.

People go to Moorefields thinking they're going to the best eye specialists in the country who have access to the best equipment and sadly that's far from the truth. Perhaps that's true of their other departments. But the A&E is just so badly laid out and the equipment so old I'd recommend you look elsewhere. The only benefit I can think of going to Moorfields over any other local A&E is simply the doctor that sees you has more experience. But the equipment he's given to use is out of the dark ages. If an eye hospital can't even manage to properly locate a simple eye chart then it shows they have set themselves a very low standard.

I'm sorry to hear that you had a poor experience with us. We are well aware that the lay-out and space in our A&E department are far from ideal and are due shortly to start a project to refurbish and expand the area, which we hope will improve the experience for patients in future. The number of patients visiting our A&E increases every year - it rose from nearly 75,000 to nearly 80,000 between 2010/11 and 2011/12 - and this, together with the age of the main hospital building, creates challenges in providing the standard we would like to in some cases. Most patients in A&E are seen within the four-hour target, with many waiting for considerably less time, and I can only apologise that this did not happen in your case.
