"poor care Aberdeen"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted to the surgical ward for a surgical procedure.

I feel the after care was very poor. I was taken off my drip after less than 24 hours and was expected to drink despite the fact I could hardly lift my arm I was so weak. My relatives were the only ones giving me fluids. Despite their attention I became very dehydrated.

The attention of the nurses I met seemed very poor. Painkillers I was written up for didn't arrive for at least half an hour. Medication I was prescribed wasn't on the ward so instead of being given an alternative, I was given nothing at all. The nurses told me to remind them when some medications were due.

A patient at a nearby bed was quite insistent he needed a bedpan. His cries fell on deaf ears and the poor soul suffered the indignity of wetting the bed. God help me if I ever take ill again.

The nurses made me feel I was just a nuisance. I discharged too early, I could barely walk and had hardly eaten at all. Poor show all round. I will certainly have to think carefully about any future operations.

I remember the days when nursing was a lifetime commitment and a calling - not so now. The nurses I met seemed to spend more time gossiping and chatting than attending to their duties.

We are very sorry indeed to hear of your poor experience of care. This is clearly not the standard of care we are aiming for.

We would like to look into this further and would welcome you getting in touch to share more details of your experience. You may do this confidentially of course.

If you would like to do this please get in touch by calling 01224 224923.
