"Laparoscopic Hysterectomy Elizabeth Ward"

About: Watford General Hospital

Anything else?

Originaly to be carried out on the24th.Jan was cancelled at 7.00 that evening because i had a slightly high temperature. My husband had telephoned 4 times through the day but temperature was never mentioned. On the last call he was told unlikely to be operated on that day poss. the next.As he new that the consultant was only there that day he asked that i be given a message to ring him and was assured i would be informed .In never was.Hysterectomy carried out onThur. 7th. Feb The anesthesis was unable to get the needle in my hand i had had a general anesthetic 3 weeks before with no problems. On the Friday i was told i had high temperature & a chest infection asked about the medication as was not stated for chest infection but was told they know best. Was taken for chest X ray but never given results despite repeated requests.I had acute pain & swelling in my right leg unable to put any weight on it .Asked nurse if i had any stiches in my vagina was told no.Catheter removed on Sunday afternoon after the consultant's intervention. On going to the toilet latter i discovered a dressing still in my vagina that should be removed according to your information from 6 to 24 hours after the operation not 4 days The nurse who eventualy removed it was unaware it was there when i asked could this be causing my problems she said possibly. The next day my temperature dropped & the pain in my leg subsided. It would seem there is a total lack of comunication between staff.

Patient dignity another of you stated aims rather falls down when you discover that you are unable to close properly the shower door & there is nowhere to hang your clothes out of the wet .The toilets are dirty & poorly maintaned

These & other problems i faced in your care are not something to be troubled with when fighting a life threatening complaint like cancer

I would only recomend to anyone to stay well clear of Watford General Hospital

Thank you for taking the trouble and time to comment on your difficult experience on Watford General’s Elizabeth Ward. We’re always concerned to hear of any patients or family members who are unhappy with the care and service they have received, and issues of this nature are taken very seriously.

Without full details of your specific case and our commitment to patient confidentiality it is difficult to comment here. But the importance of a wholly positive patient experience is one of our key objectives, and the issue of communication between our staff and patients is a fundamental area we’re working hard to improve in. Anything contrary to this is completely unacceptable.

Please may we reiterate that the Trust is fully committed to ensuring that all of our patients and their relatives have the right to be treated with respect and dignity. We sincerely apologise that you feel that this is not happening in your case.

We know that our senior clinical colleagues will want to investigate this thoroughly on your behalf, so we can look into what went wrong for you, and why. Apart from giving you some answers, if would also help put things right if we can. Therefore if you are willing to do so, please contact us directly at wherts-tr.complaintsteam@nhs.net . We will aim to thoroughly investigate these issues promptly, and provide you with a detailed response.
