I am very sorry to hear of such a negative experience of our EPAU service as the staff try their outmost to provide a sensitive compassionate service when there may be sad news to give to their clients. Unfortunately the service is a very busy one which we have recognised and are planning to expand it to accommodate more clients in the near future. Every member of staff in the unit does care deeply about the experience each woman receives as we are very aware that not all the women will have an happy outcome to their visit but unfortunately this is outside ours or anyone else's control.

Unfortunately we are unable to provide a female sonographer on every occasion which is clearly stated on the Hospital website and on the one that the GP's use. If you had asked for a female sonographer, we would have tried to have found one, but that may have meant a delay for you to receive your scan.

It is not the role of the sonographer to give a diagnosis to the clients as it is the doctors who are specifically trained in interpreting the scans and in how to give clients bad news. Unfortunately sometimes with the case of miscarriage it can be difficult to work out what the progress of the pregnancy is, as in the early stages it is so small and can be very difficult to see what is actually happening. The doctors are very aware not to give women false hope and always want to give accurate results. I am very sorry that this doctor did not explain things fully or offer further support.

I will be reminding all staff in the EPAU department about the sensitivity of their areas and about imparting sad news to their clients.

Please accept my most sincere apologies for your visit not meeting your expectations at what was a very sad time for you. If you would like to come and discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me via the The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust switchboard on 01895 238282. Also I include a weblink on our hospital website that women find helpful who have had similar experiences - Go to the THHwebsite www.thh.nhs.uk then click Services, then click service A-Z then go to EPAU.
