"care could have been more thoughtful"

About: The Great Western Hospital

Anything else?

The ward staff were lovely and kind, but really didn't seem to think about the implications of their decisions. Emptying stoma bags at meal times, emptying catheters while on drugs rounds, just doesn't make sense for creating a nice environment for those staying in the ward. Most of us were struggling to eat at all due to gastric problems, and all ended up not eating as a smelly stoma bag was emptied at almost every meal time. Just a little more thought would have made care so much better.

I was also told by the surgeon I would need a stoma due to the severity of the condition, no discussion no other options. I had a second opinion from another hospital where they specialise in my problem. No treatment required except a radical change in diet. One year later I am still well .

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experiences.

I've spoken to our Clinical Nurse Specialist for Stoma Care, and have made sure that she is aware of the issues you mention, particularly about the timings of when bags and catheters are being dealt with. Although it's great news that you're well after a year of changing your diet, it appears that our communication around your condition could have been improved. I'll make sure I feed that back to my colleagues.

If you'd like to discuss any of this with us personally, our Customer Service Team will be happy to talk either on the phone 01793 60 4031, or by emailing pals.team@gwh.nhs.uk.
