"Malfunction of the Burton Clinic"

About: Queen's Hospital, Burton Upon Trent

Anything else?

My wife's pre booked operation was cancelled 4 hours before arrival, without explanation.

The peration was re-arranged.

The care my wife received was no way comparable to a previous visit some three years earlier. The staffing on the Burton Clinic does not appear to be as good as it was, now using agency staff. My wife' s catheter was not checked and over flowed she also had to ask for the anti blood clotting injection prior to discharge as it was overlooked.

Neither Consultants, nurses or clerical staff seem to be openly willing to explain what is going on at the Clinic, a wall of collective silence or fear seems to be in place.

We have picked up rumours that beds have been taken out of use in the main hopital and that patients are avoiding Stafford Hospital thereby putting additional strain on Burton hospital which means that the Burton Clinic is being used as an overflow for general NHI use thereby defeating its prime function.

I am sorry to hear of your wife’s recent experiences at Burton Clinic and that you felt the service didn’t deliver the care you expected. Please be assured we take views such as these very seriously and endeavour to make improvements where necessary. I hope you felt able to share your views with the Trust at the time.

However, if you wish to make a formal comment please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service. This can be done via 01283 593110 (voicemail for out of hours calls) or email: pals@burtonft.nhs.uk

This is the best route for ensuring your comments are documented and enables us to answer your queries directly on an individual basis, rather than giving a generalised response.

To explain a little of the background, Burton Clinic has expanded recently by opening three additional beds which has a resulted in vacancies for staff. We are now recruiting to these positions and will include a senior level nurse.

As Manager of Burton Clinic, I can only offer my apologies for your experience and assure you action plans are in place to improve our service.

Catherine Wagstaff

Ward Manager, Burton Clinic
