"Good experience overall"

About: St James's University Hospital

Anything else?

I had a mastopexy procedure to correct tuberous breasts. I stayed on ward J23 in the Chancellors wing of the hospital. I found the staff very friendly, happy and helpful with no apparent limit to the amount of time they were willing to spend helping and answering questions and good 24 hour care in place.

The ward was clean and comfortable, although a little noisy with the building work going on there at the moment. I cannot comment on the food as due to the timing of my operation and subsequent discharge and the fact that the aneasthetic made me quite ill I was only able to eat toast, although the menu I saw did look quite promising.

The accomodation was single sex, clean and comfortable and the atmosphere relaxed, understanding and friendly. I am quite a self concious person and I felt comfortable during the entire process.

However the communication with the doctors and surgeons seemed a little lacking.I was also unhappy with the amount of time I had to wait for my operation, I did as requested and stopped eating and drinking at midnight and arrived on the ward at 7am and was not taken for my operation until 3:30pm though this was an unusual case as I was to benefit from the expertise of 2 surgeons during my procedure.

Also at one point I required medication prescribed by a doctor and this seemed to take an excessive length of time to arrive.

I felt like I was involved in the decisions taken about my care all of the way along and after the operation I felt like all of the details were taken care of and I was very happy with the result. I cannot overstate how supportive the nurses were and how much of a difference this made to my experience.

I was also impressed that my partner was able to stay with me throughout the process and allowed to await my return on the ward.

The morning after my discharge seemed a little unorganised and information was difficult to come by, but again the nursing staff were ready and willing to help. Throughout the process my surgeons seemed dedicated to getting the best outcome for me and did a great job.
