"Being taught a lesson by a nurse at an MRI scan"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary / Neurology

(as the patient),

I attended for an MRI scan on my knee. I was carrying a lot of tension because I am terrified of being in very enclosed spaces.

I was working hard to keep this under control and had gone into the scanning machine and was OK. I then put on earphones with assistance. All was OK. I then received a very loud blast of OASIS music through the earphones which shattered any measure of control I had - I think I screamed and it took them some time to turn it off and me a long time to calm down.

After the scan had finished, far from offering any kind of apology, the attending nurse bringing in an elderly patient pointed out to me that this woman was in her eighties and wasn't scared in the MRI. She made it very clear that I was silly or naughty in my response to the experience.

I feel that I was abused by the lack of care and forethought of the nurses, and humiliated and belittled by their 'silly girl' response to my feelings.

The MRI department would wish to apologise for the difficult experience you have had. It is not their intention to make any patient’s time with them unpleasant. Staff appreciate how upset you must have felt and would like to apologise for this.

The incident has been discussed at a recent radiographers meeting. As a result, staff must now ask patients if they would like music, and patients should be warned that if they choose to have music it will be loud in order to reduce the sound of the scanner. It may take a few minutes to find the music of their choice.

The manager of the service was very upset that you were made to feel belittled and humiliated by a member of staff and had reinforced the need for staff to work on communication with patients and treat every patient as an individual. We are very conscious that every patient requires a high standard of care.
