"Maternity Ward"

About: Lister Hospital

Anything else?

I went in to have an induction with my 4th child as i had a seperated pelvis and was high risk. I was told that i needed to go onto the consultant led ward but instead was put on the midwife ran ward which i was not happy about as my baby was high risk of breathing problems. There was no space so i was put into a store room where two beds had been put. it was full of old furniture and the lights didnt work properly. Around 8 oclock my contractions started and i was buzzing the midwife and was told that it was fake labour pains. After 2 hours they agreed to give me gas and air but sent my partner home even though i told them i was in labour. I was then left no one checked on me and i couldnt reach the buzzer in the end my gas run out and i had to shout for help as i was in so much pain and couldnt get up eventually a midwife came even then she didnt take me down to the consultant led unit i think she paniced because of the way i had been treated and were trying to get me to deliver on the ward. They eventually rung my partner as there was a complication and the baby had got stuck. He insisted i was taken to the consultant unit. When i arrived on the unit the midwifes from the ward were not sure how long my baby had been stuck so they gave a rough estimate despite what i was saying. The midwives in the consultant led unit were fantastic and i was given an epidural and given a lot of care and support by them but the experience was ruined by what had happened up on the ward. My baby was born with a huge red bruise on the top of his head and was extremeley uncomftable for the first few weeks from being stuck longer than he should have. All in all i would not recomend Lister Maternity unit under any circumstances. I found some of the midwives rude uncaring and incompetant.

Thank you for getting in touch to let us know your thoughts about the care you received at the hands of the Lister's maternity team back in December 2011. Whilst I'm sure those memories are still very fresh for you, it is some time ago - and since then, we have created the new Diamond Jubilee Maternity Unit at the Lister that supports new ways of working that we feel would have prevented the sort of negative experience you had from happening in the first place.

Despite all this happening some 15 months or so ago, we wonder if you've had the chance to raise your concerns with the team's senior midwife, whom we know would welcome a chance to discuss your concerns with you, as well as take you through the changes made to the unit so that such events are unlikely to be repeated for other mothers? If you're willing for this to happen, then please just email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net and will arrange for this to happen.
