"Rude Doctor"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Accident & emergency

(as the patient),

I suffered an Angina attack and was taken to A&E department of Forth Valley Royal Hospital Larbert. The staff were very kind and caring. I was admitted and told that I would be kept overnight. They were waiting on a bed at the acute assessment ward.

I was finally taken there around 4am in the morning. I drifted of to sleep around 5am. I was woken up again around 5. 45am by a Doctor who started firing questions at me in what seemed a very impatient dictatorial manner. I got a bit confused and mixed up this seemed to make the doctor very angry. They told me to just answer their questions as they had another patient to see and reminded me that their shift was about to finish.

The more impatient they got with me the more mixed up I became. I reminded this Doctor that I had less than an hours sleep all night and that I was sorry for getting mixed up. They sharply told me that they were not interested and just wanted me to answer their questions. When the doctor left, I felt very upset and just wanted to go home.

Later another Doctor and a young male nurse came to see me. They were so nice, very kind and patient. I told them about the previous Doctors attitude but they could say nothing. I can't report the rude doctor because I was so upset I forgot their name.

If I ever have to go back into hospital, I will be taking either a small hidden video camera or a dictaphone with me because sadly in my experience this is not an isolated incident.

Thanks for your posting which I sent to the Charge Nurses and the Consultant responsible for the area you commented on.

Firslty can I thanks you for sharing a balanced view of the care you recieved, its very useful to see both good and poor experiences, however we would like to apologise for the negative way in which the doctor communicated with you.

It is difficult to offer any explanation as no individual has been approached to offer a personal apology. What we have done is agreed to use your posting in training and education sessions with medical and non medical staff as an illustration of the way patients feel when communication is not effective.

If you would like to discuss any of this further I wou;ld be happy to talk through.

You can contact me by phone on 07827820353

I hope you have made a full recovery and are feeling better.

Arlian Mallis
