My son who is now 13 was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes just over a year ago. It was a bewildering and traumatic time for everyone involved. Despite being a healthcare professional myself I was overwhelmed by the complexity and implications of the condition. My son however just wanted to get back to playing sport. As a school, regional and national league Basketball player there was nothing more important to him than to be able to do what he loves, and so started our journey to support him in his decision. It has been a challenging year and we are still looking for the support he needs, our Diabetes Specialist Nurse has been fantastic in helping us to navigate this new world but accessing specialist sports advice has proved unsuccessful to date. I therefore resolved to use social media to raise awareness, share information and connect us to other individuals/families who are sharing our experience. Part of this decision was to make a pledge for NHS Change Day on 13th March 2013. Join me there and lets make difference.
