"Cancellation of surgery 3 times"

About: Tameside General Hospital / Maxillo-Facial surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

The following occurred at Tameside General Hospital

I wish to inform you of my family's distress.

My son has a huge cyst under his chin which requires removal.

His operation has been cancelled twice late in the evening the night before the operation was due.

Today he was waiting from mid morning to late afternoon in the waiting room to be then taken into the theatre where his blood pressure and name band were applied and then he was placed in a theatre gown.

His operation was then cancelled for the 3rd time.

This is a most distressing situation. He has recently lost his father, has had to return from university on 3 separate occasions to build himself up to this procedure.

He shaved his beard off this morning- which he had grown to hide this large disfigurement- and now has to return to university, with an abnormality of which he is extremely conscious.

It has broken my heart to see him sobbing this evening..

This is very distressing and very unsatisfactory.

I am extremely sorry that your son’s experience has been far from the level we aspire to at Tameside Hospital.

I would urge you to contact the Trust’s Complaints Department on 0161 922 6025 so that a thorough investigation can be undertaken and we can respond in more detail.

Paul Williams

Director of Clinical Services.

Would you like to help the hospital to improve its services further? We are currently looking for patients and carers to become involved in a development called “Patient Stories”. We want to know more about our services from the point of view of those who received them – what was good, bad, what could be improved, what should be changed. Want to know more about what’s involved? Please contact John Goodenough, Director of Nursing at
