"Why is the NHS still using 0845 numbers?"

About: Tamar Referral & Appointments Centre

(as the patient),

When will NHS and NHS contractors stop using 0845 numbers. It just seems as thought they are making money from calls. There is another option - 0300 numbers, which are cheaper and non geographical.

Dear ‘stopusing0845numbers’,

Thank you for getting in touch with us, we have had similar queries in the past regarding TRAC using a 0845 number as the main contact number and this is something we will be changing in the near future.

The TRAC service was set up in 2009 and has been calling patients directly to book an appointment in the majority of cases. There was very little need for a local number as the majority of calls are made by the TRAC team. We are currently conducting a telephony review and are planning to set up local geographic contact numbers (01752) that patients can use in conjunction with the 0845 numbers.

I would like to assure you the TRAC team does not profit from using a 0845 number. We have gathered a lot of information around different phone numbers and unfortunately the cost varies for everyone and is determined by which phone package the caller is signed up to some of which do not charge for calls to 0845 numbers.

I hope that this response has gone some way to answering your questions but if not, please feel free to contact me again. Alternatively you can contact me directly on 01626 883712 on Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm.

Best Wishes
