"2 week stay with spinal fracture"

About: Pontefract General Infirmary

Anything else?

I was moved to a ward at PGI after an accident involving a spinal injury. I was on this ward for 4 days and was in extreme pain, I was only given basic over the counter medication, I was then referred for an MRI where a fracture was identified. My meds were nt changed and I remained in a great deal of pain for a further 3 days when a nurse requested they be increased due o my injury.

After a week I was moved to another part of the ward as there were several days when no staff turned up for work so eventually the ward was closed. During my first weeks stay my bed sheets were not changed once, I was not able to get out of bed alone but no help was offered, no washing facilities were offered. I was having to use a bed pan, this caused extreme pain and discomfort and I have since discovered that the wrong sort was being used and hat this could have worsened my injury.

I was then moved and put in a cubicle overnight, whilst here I heard staff outside my room discussing my move to a ward where the last patient had just been moved and had MRSA. I obviously wasn't happy with this and when I approached a sister and explained my concerns and my lack of treatment I was told by her that she was ' too long in the tooth to care'.

During my stay all the assistance I required was provided by my family members who were helping me to use te bathroom and shower.

My physio turned up about 3 times, I was never given any information or advice.

When I was released I was given less than a weeks medication and no advice or aftercare info.

I believe this hospital hindered my recovery and meant I was left suffering for longer than I should have been.

There were individual members of staff who stood out and who were fantastic and who the NHS should be proud to employ however they were few and far between.
