"Very disappointed with KGH."

About: Kettering General Hospital / Accident and emergency Kettering General Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

My father is currently at KGH where he has been for the past 2 and half weeks. He started out at A&E where he waited 10 hours to be moved to a bed. He was moved on to Middleton Assessment Unit for 2 days before being moved to Naseby ward. On Naseby the staff were nice and took care of him well. Its a shame he had to witness not so nice care towards other (elderly) patients. However my father was treated fine.

After a further 3 days and my dads continued difficulty breathing, he was transferred to the respiratory ward Harrowden A. Over the week of him being on this ward, the treatment and lack of professional care pushed him to discharge himself against advice.

The staff are rude and have no empathy towards patients. His bed was left days without being changed. His lunch was still left on his bed in the evening when I went to visit and no dinner had been taken to him. No communication or friendly conversation took place. He was basically forgotten about. He was in isolation due to having suspected TB and he felt very alone and ignored by staff in his room.

The cleanliness was appalling. He witnessed a cleaner in the wash room thoroughly clean inside and out of the toilet then proceed to wash the sink with the same cloth.

Some staff refused to enter his room because they seemed unwilling to put on the mask and gown etc. So he was not getting regular hot drinks and his water was being left over 24 hours before being changed.

When my father had finally had enough he felt no option other than discharge himself. He was and still is very poorly and unfortunately has ended up back in hospital however he will not return to that ward.

Very disappointed with KGH.

I am very sorry to hear that the experience of care at Kettering General Hospital has fallen short of what you and we would expect. In order to investigate this thoroughly and to learn from this experience, I would very much welcome the opportunity to meet with you and your father. In the meantime, I have escalated this to the Matron and Head of Nursing for these areas for them to increase their surveillance and presence.

Unfortunately I am on leave until 5th March. In my absence, I would recommend you contact Jo Sharp, Head of Nursing for Medicine. She can be contacted at jo.sharp@kgh.nhs.uk, 01536 491588I.

After 5th March, I can be contacted at leanne.hackshall@kgh.nhs.uk, 01536 493527 or via my PA Yvonne Tinto at yvonne.tinto@kgh.nhs.uk, 01536 492380.
