"colonoscopy, Beynon Centre, New Cross Hospital"

About: New Cross Hospital / Gastroenterology New Cross Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I had to have a 2nd follow up colonoscopy due to having a polyp removed a few years ago. My last experience here 5 years ago was horrific, the pain was excruciating and was non stop from start to finish. Needless to say, I was terrified of what lay in store for me yesterday.

After being called onto the ward I was introduced to my nurse, Richard, who explained what would happen. We spoke about my previous experience, and he assured me that the theatre staff who would be looking after me would be made aware of this by himself, which he did, immediately, returning to reassure me that the team would take very good care of me.

After changing into the hospital gown(s), I was shown to the female waiting area. I was then met by Dr Ghanghro, who would be performing the procedure. He again reassured me that I was in very good hands, and would do everything possible to avoid a repeat of last time, unfortunately, by this point, I was already sobbing in fear. He was so kind and sympathetic, constantly reassuring me as he led me into the theatre. Once there, I was introduced to the nurses, Micheala and Patsy who calmed me while Dr Ghanghro prepared me for my sedation, which was very welcome indeed! The procedure began, and throughout Micheala held my hand or gave words of encouragement. When the going got a bit tough, Dr did as promised and waited for me to gather some courage before continuing. I had to move from my side onto my back at one stage, then again on to my tummy, so that the Dr could navigate my very awkward bowel. Soon it was all over and I was wheeled away to rest before being given a much needed cup of tea (well, three! )and some biscuits. Even though the ward should close at 5. 30, it was now after 6. 00 and the staff were still continuing give their own time to looking after myself and another lady on the ward. Dr Ghanghro came to see me and told me that it had been quite difficult to perform, but everything was absolutely fine.

I cannot give enough praise to every single member of the team who looked after me yesterday. The professionalism and compassion of these individuals gives massive credit to a service that is all too often on the receiving end of negative exposure. I, for one, will be forever grateful that I had such wonderful people taking care of me. The hospital management should be very proud of this unit.

Dear Patient,

Firstly, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to share your experiences of your treatment with us on the Patient Opinion website. It was great for us to read how the staff were able to help you at what was a very anxious time for you.

Your story has been shared with senior leaders, the team and individuals mentioned and the feedback is greatly appreciated by all.

We would really like to use your story a little more widely across the organisation, if we can. We regularly ask patients, relatives and carers if they would be happy for us to record their experiences either to CD or, more visually to a DVD. This is so we can pass the learning opportunities these stories provide around the organisation. Seeing and hearing the words from patients themselves really do bring their experiences to life for all of our staff.

If you would like to help us in this, I would very much appreciate it if you would contact me on 01902 695363, mobile 07557 179555 or via email to jamieemery@nhs.net and we can make some arrangements to come and record your story at a time and place convenient to yourself.

If you would prefer not to we absolutely understand and respect this so please do not feel obliged or under any pressure.

Thank you again and best wishes.
