About: Southmead Hospital

Anything else?

my husband has been diagnosed with COPD and heart failure. After many trips into hospital in the last 2 years was found to have a small leak in heart oweing to an operation 20 years for a hole in heart. Has just spent 4 weeks in hospital, including Christmas and they found the leak in heart when he was sent to Frenchay. He was relieved that something was being done and quite hopeful. Has been discharged over a week now and all the problems still exist, but has received an appointment for referral about his heart in July. As he is 70 and struggling for breath every day . How can this be in this day and age.

Dear Onlymag – I am sorry to hear that your husband’s condition has not improved and that his symptoms continue despite his operation. Unfortunately, without knowing details, the Trust cannot identify your husband to comment from a clinical perspective on his condition. However, the wait for his next appointment may be due to a number of reasons, such as the need for the operation site to heal fully, or because the clinical assessment that it is appropriate to wait until this time. I would be happy to investigate further if you wish to contact us via the link below with your husband’s details; i.e. name, address NHS number, etc. and we have proof of his consent. complaints@nbt.nhs.uk

If you feel your husband’s health deteriorates before he attends his July appointment, please contact his GP who will be able to make a more urgent referral.

Kind regards - Steve Sykes, Advice and Complaints Team
