"Need to review your cleaning arrangements"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

Anything else?

Went to A+E around 7pm on Sat night. Blood on the walls, in the sink and in the Loo in the Gents Toilet. Blood also on the walls of the Consultation area where i was first seen.

Can't be a good idea having blood present like that in an A+E area. Ok, it's the weekend, I know, but this is meant to be a 24hours fcaility, so patients deserve better. No criticism at all of the staff, but QE need to look at the Cleaning. Floors were not cleean either, but I guess nowadays maybe we don't expect that (although should).

We provide a cleaning service to Accident and Emergency throughout the day. We apologise that the facilities were not in a condition that we would expect. Nurses do clean the treatment areas after each patient has left but the blood on the wall of the consultation area described must have been overlooked on this occasion. The cleaning response service operates 24/7 and if concerns are raised we can ensure a speedy response. Arising from this incident, we are placing sign-off cards in the toilets there, to help us monitor this even more closely.

As for the floor not being clean, it may have been during a snowy period when patients cannot help but bring in wetness and grit indoors on their footwear. It would not be safe to the wash the floors in Accident and Emergency during a busy time, because of the risk of patients and family members slipping. However, the facilities in the new Emergency Care Centre being built will make it much easier to keep public areas clean.
