My sister was hospitalised for 2weeks in which time she had only 2 tests which were inconclusive. They kept saying they were going to get the consultant to see her, but she actually refused to give a consultation, the doctor on the ward told my sister this. My sister left hospital with an infection that wasn't treated. I feel her care has been poor. We complained to PALS and the business manager and nothing has been done, in fact to my last complaint we didnt even get a reply. I am incredibly dissappointed and feel there is no help left to try.

A consultant may not always be available throughout the day to review patients on the ward as they will often be in clinic or operating in theatres. However, all our inpatients are reviewed in daily ward rounds which will always include a senior registrar or Clinical Fellow. At least three ward rounds a week will be lead by a consultant so patients who stay for over a week will have been reviewed by a consultant.

Diagnostic test/Investigations can often be invasive so our clinical teams are always careful to ensure that they are only initiated when they are clinically indicated/appropriate and helpful in contributing to the future management of that patient.

I am extremely sorry that you did not receive assistance or achieve a resolution from our patient advice and liaison service (PALS) nor a manager. If your sister would like to take things further please ask her to contact our complaints department on complaints.officer@uclh.nhs.uk.
