"Medically managed miscarriage at Royal Lancaster Infirmary"

I was admitted to Ward 16 in the Women’s Unit at Lancaster Royal Infirmary on 24th May for a medically managed miscarriage. The care I received both on Ward 16, and in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit two days before, was surely second to none.

Everyone at the Pregnancy Assessment Unit was caring and sensitive. After breaking bad news to us that our baby had died in the womb a few weeks before, they showed us to a quiet room, made us cups of tea, and left us to grieve alone for a while. The nurse, followed by a doctor, then came in to explain all my treatment options in a very caring and sensitive manner.

All the staff I came into contact with couldn’t have been more caring. I was given a room of my own, and my fiancé was allowed to stay with me throughout. This made the dreadful procedure easier to face. We were both particularly surprised and impressed by the sensitivity with which our tiny, stillborn foetus was treated. The nurse brought our Little One to us in a tiny crib, so we could spend some time alone with it. It was the most miraculous and beautiful thing that either of us have ever seen. We were given several options regarding cremation or burial. The nurses offered to take photos of our Little One for us to keep. We accepted this offer, and will treasure the photos for the rest of our lives. We were very touched when they gave us a hand written certificate this certificate, also.

A nurse was also kind enough to ask a vicar, Reverend Brown, to visit us. He made a special journey to the hospital to say a prayer with us. This helped us a lot. He even called in to the ward the next morning to see how I was, and sent us a card afterwards to our home address.

Thank you very much to all the staff at the Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Ward 16 for the exemplary care with which myself, my fiancé and our Little One were treated. I don’t believe we could have received better care anywhere in the world.
