"Lack of communication between departments"

About: Rotherham Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My father had a stroke back in August resulting in him being admitted to Hospital. No-one would listen or acknowledge all the other health problems he already had which were being treated at the same hospital.

Since then my father has been back in hospital twice over different conditions and on neither occasion were the staff aware (on 2 different wards) that my father had had two strokes or was no longer able to walk due to a spinal problem.

As part of my role, I support clinical services who undertake patient and public involvement on behalf of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust which helps us to develop or redesign our services with patients in mind, from the valuable feedback we are given.

Dear Jayne,

Please accept my apologies for the distress this has caused you and your family.

I am sorry that relevant information has clearly not been referred to during your father’s admission in order for us to care for him appropriately, as this is not what we would expect.

The Chief Nurse would be very grateful if you or your father would take a little more of your time to contact our Patient Services department at complaints@rothgen.nhs.uk or telephone 01709 424461, to allow us to undertake a thorough investigation of your experience and identify the ward(s) and team(s) you refer to. This will allow us to take appropriate steps to ensure no other patient can have such an unacceptable experience and should be grateful if you would please accept our most sincere apologies.

With best wishes,

Grace

Dear Jayne

We recently saw your Patient Opinion post about the care and treatment your father received after his stroke and that you do not feel that he received good care. If you are unhappy about the treatment he received in hospital it may be helpful to contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS). PALS is an independent organisation, there to ensure that the NHS listens to patients, their relatives, carers and friends, answers their questions and resolves their concerns as quickly as possible. You can telephone PALS at Rotherham Hospital on 01709 423030

or email them at complaints@rothgen.nhs.uk

You may also be interested to hear about the work of the Stroke Association and how we may be able to support your father. We have Coordinators across the UK, providing information, advice and support to people affected by stroke. You can find out if there is a service in your area by contacting our Stroke Helpline. Our Helpline staff are there for anyone who has been effected by stroke in any way. We can offer information about stroke, practical advice and support, or simply someone to talk to. The Stroke Helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm on 0303 30 33 100. You can also email us at info@stroke.org.uk.

You may also find our website helpful. There is lots of information about stroke, including our range of leaflets and factsheets at www.stroke.org.uk.

I hope that this is helpful and that your father is now getting the support that he needs to make the best recovery possible.

Yours sincerely

Rhian Thompson
