"My Stay in Medical Assessment Unit"

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

Anything else?

I recently was admitted as a in Patient after I had visited the ACC clinic on the 30th January 2013 of which I have under the care of a Wonderful and delightful staff.

On my last visit I was seen by the doctor who has been treating my infected leg ulcer since October last year.

When I was told that I was to be admitted to the MAU ward I was dreading the thought of basing it on previous stays on this ward.

But to my surprise and relief I found the staff to be very friendly and caring, and they were always available to answer any questions that me or my wife and carer asked them.

I also was pleasantly surprised by the choice and the quality of the meals provided considering what they were like a couple of years ago when I had to stay I would say it is a 100% improvement.

The only problem was the toilet opposite Bay B I was in which the actual toilet was had urine all over the floor and the seat, which I had to clean my self I did with great difficulty being disabled, also the light in the toilet section was not working.

Despite me reporting this to the male nurse who was looking and had to wash this urine of my feet.

This was a shame because I went toilet the following day and neither of the two problems had been dealt with, this unfortunately somewhat spoilt on what was a short and quite and if you can say any Hospital Stay is pleasant.

The other thing which I find very difficult to understand is why Pharmacy have to take away your medication after they have already discussed it with me and my wife who had provided the the nursing staff and them with a complete preciption list take away your medication and delay your stay by 2 to 3 hours God knows how long I would have had to wait.Patient Transport was told I was ready at 2 P.M and if had not been through the hard work of a Staff Nurse who whenever I am waiting to go home is true Angel and some of your younger staff coluld learn from her the art of how to treat people with respect, which sadly still exists in some of your departments.

Also the fact the driver of the ambulance asking Patient Transport if could wait until Pharmacy had sorted out all the confusion of which they were very helpful and agreed he could wait with me.

Overall most spects of the Hospital has improved but alas the Pharmacy department still can not get their act together whilst I understand if you are being discharged with new medicaion its one thing, but when they are just taking my medication that has been prescribed by my GP and Doctors from the various Hospitals I visit is time wasting and very tedious to say the least because most of the delays are caused by Pharmacy and if they were to leave my medication that goes through more checks than I have had to put up with at Customs at all the airports I have visited.

Very many thanks for getting in touch and leaving us your feedback, which is very much appreciated - both what went well and how it could improved. Just wonder whether or not you might want to get in touch so we can follow up these experiences and learn from them - if you would like to do this, just email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net and we'll take it from there.
