About: Kettering General Hospital

Anything else?

After finding a lump in my breast in August 2011 my GP referred me to the Breast Care Unit, where I had a mammogram, scan and biopsy. 2 weeks later I was told I had cancer and that I would need to have the lump removed, possibly have chemotherapy and probably radiotherapy. I had bone scans, CT Scans and MRI scans I felt like I had moved in! Everyone was so kind, you are going through the worst time but you are treated as an individual. I had my lump removed as a day case in the treatment centre and another 2 weeks later I was told I would need a mastectomy as the lump was larger than was originally thought. I hadn't even contemplated this so was quite shocked but the surgeon was fantastic and told me I could have my breast reconstructed at the same time as the mastectomy, there were a few options and I made the choice which one I wanted to have. You get to choose what you want, but everyone is there to explain each procedure so you have all the information. After my mastectomy I was not sure I wanted to look at my breast after the dressings were off but I was amazed at how good it looked. I had my chemotherapy in the centenary wing where all the nurses are lovely, you kind of miss seeing them when your treatment is over. I have also had a reduction and uplift on my good breast so they are more symmetrical and I had lipofil in my reconstructed breast to plump it up. The care I received was fantastic everyone is kind and they treat you with respect. My surgeon is brilliant and lovely. Thank you. I now try to go to the BRA Group on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. This group is for women who are having reconstruction and we talk about our experiences. This is really helpful to women who are wondering what kind of reconstruction to have. The Breast Care Nurses are great but it is nice to speak to someone with first hand experience who knows exactly how you are feeling. Cancer is not nice but if you have it Kettering Breast Unit is the place to go.
