We're ten days on from our 86 yr old mothers admittance for pain and infection. Pain needed investigating so we got her into hospital thinking this was the best place for her - how wrong can we be. At home on the day she was admitted even though ill she could walk with her trolley, get in and out of bed and speak. 10 days of hospital 'treatment' she is now too weak and doped up she cannot raise her head, open her eyes or speak - she has delirium. She is also weak from lack of food and drink. She is often just comatose and left to sleep hunched up in a chair, getting cold. She has now lost motor skills and unable to walk or grip with her left hand, she has tremours and lesions on her arm. Comatose she was left unaided on a commode at the foot of her bed, not in reach of buzzer, she fell off. How long she was on the floor we don't know. She was distressed, put to bed given Zomorph. We found out at at 2pm visiting, in 2.5 hours she never moved a muscle, back at night and she was in same position, just left. I woke her up to feed her. No food/drink in who knows how long?Left hand now too weak to hold a beaker or mug, contents of which she spilled down her, if we had not been I'm convinced she would have sat in wet nighdress.She's in end bay and no one seems to bother. Persistent requests for soft food diet are ignored. We take home made soup & bread, and yoghurt. She eats every bit. She is starving. Mum cannot chew or swallow properly, following stroke her right side is weak. If we were not going in she would just be left, like the elderly patient in the next bed, who is supposed to be turned every two hours. I was there for 3.5 hours and no one gave her a drink or turned her. Talked to nurses, talked to doctor asking why she is now comatose. No one has told us what is happening, what has happened, what the Care Plan is - nothing. They persistently mention dementia, no matter how many times we tell them mum does not have dementia. They persistently say confusion, mum is comatose and has delirium - not confusion. Is it the drugs or a medical condition? She has a distended stomach - I had to ask for a bladder scan. Told result OK - so what's the follow up? Told mum was to have a full physiotherapy check - not happened. Told they 'thought' she still had urine infection. Why don't they know? Asked if they had done a test - No. Told SALT team would see her - not happened. Mum is disappearing before our eyes mentally and physically. Total lack of simple nursing care. Last Friday totally lost it with ward sister. Who admitted mum had not had the care she should have, she apologised. Asked me what I wanted her to do - Your job!
