"Lack of basic care and follow up"

About: Wansbeck Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

My Mother attended Wansbeck Hospital as a day patient for gall bladder surgery.

To cut a long, very long story short, it went badly wrong and she ended up in ITU for 2 weeks, very lucky to survive. I have no gripes with the nurses/doctors on ITU they were fantastic, but once she was well enough to be on a ward, it was if she was just forgotten about.

One night, she couldn't reach her buzzer and call to say she needed the loo, she ended up wetting the bed, the nurse who eventually came around was very rude, treating her in the most disgusting manner, making her sit in wet nightclothes while she changed the bed, and speaking to her as if she were senile.

None of the staff bothered to come and speak to us about her progress or recovery and she was placed on 4 different wards before being discharged.

Following her hospital stay, there has been no follow up appointments, she has been left with a huge incisional hernia and post traumatic stress from her ordeal, she has since been diagnosed with bladder cancer, however we have chosen to use the Freeman Hospital instead and I must say, what a difference. Staff who care about their patients and actually bother to speak to the family.

Dear benanna

Thank you taking the time to let us know about your mother’s attendance at Wansbeck General Hospital.

We are very sorry to hear about the experience your mother had – clearly this falls well below the standards that we expect in our hospitals and from our staff. This has been passed on to the Deputy Director in charge of the areas who would like to talk to you personally in order to investigate this further. If you would like to call our switchboard on 0844 811 8111 and ask to speak to Marion Dickson, Deputy Director of Surgery and she will be able to help.

Alternatively if you would prefer you can contact our Patient Services department on 0191 203 1340 /patient.services@nhct.nhs.uk or at the address below:
