Surgery performed for laminectomy/ suspected tumour. Had to wait ten days to hear whether it was cancer or not. Thankfully it was the latter. Young surgeon came to inspect wound on day of discharge. Arrived in theatre garb, closed the curtains around the bed and then started to prod around this invasive wound without first washing their hands. They'd had to press lift buttons and touch goodness knows how many door handles before they arrived on the ward. It beggars belief - I feel sorry for the infection control team at this hospital. All their hard work and still the message hasn't hit home with some. The nurses were superb if rather over-stretched. Surgeon was non-communicative and patient wasn't even acknowledged. However, the surgery proved to be successful and life-changing so if you need it then go ahead - just be prepared!
