"Stroke unit care."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

Anything else?

My mother had suffered a collapse and was admitted into hospital in early December. When in A&E we were kept informed of her status and whether she would be admitted, she was then taken to the Short Stay Medical assessment unit, from there she was transferred to the stroke ward.

During each stage of this process, the nurses and doctors kept us informed of my mother's progress. During Mum's time in hospital, the staff treated her with care and affection, ensuring her comfort, dignity and well being. The patience displayed by every staff member, both with my mother and with my family's many questions, was exemplary. Over the course of Mum's stay we spoke to many consultants dealing with different aspects of her care and felt involved in the process.

Sadly, my mother died. During her stay the chaplain visited her and was a great comfort, to Mum and to us. He stayed with her so we could step out of the room and provided a listening ear and light-hearted relief during a traumatic time.

I cannot thank or praise the staff at the QE highly enough. They cared for my Mum, tried all they could to keep her with us, and when the time came, were simply lovely.

Iain, many thanks for sharing this information about your mother’s final weeks and about the high quality of communication with both patient and family. We also note what you say about the sensitivity, patience and support you received towards the end of your mother’s life. We shall ensure that these positive comments are passed on to staff in A+E, the Medical Assessment Unit and the Chaplaincy.
