"Dignity and respect for older people"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

Anything else?

My elderly mother was a self caring 80 year old who attended A/E with pnuemonia . This was not diagnosed and 4 weeks later is now in need of long term care - The NHS will continue to struggle unless care of the elderly improves. The initial investment in treatment early in illness could maintain independence and save many thousands of pounds.

Basic care costs very little time but make huge amounts of difference

We are sorry to hear that you were not happy with the care your mother received in our Emergency Department and we have made the team aware of your comments. Pneumonia is not always a straightforward condition to diagnose and not all patients with pneumonia will need to be admitted as an inpatient, but it is of course difficult to comment without knowing your mother’s full details. We know it is very important that we get the care of our older patients right and ensure their dignity is respected and we are always trying to make improvements in this area. We have recently implemented a new model of care for patients requiring emergency care and treatment and are designing an Older Persons Liason Team to support front line doctors and nurses in providing the best and most appropriate care across our hospitals. We have appointed a Lead Nurse for Older People who has done some excellent work in this field and is committed to making further positive changes. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss your experiences in more detail and invite you to contact our patient experience team on 01932 722612.
