"My 88 yr old mother who has advanced Alzheimers"

About: Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust / Older people's mental health

(as a carer),

She had to be admitted in November 2012, as an emergency to the Castleside Unit at the General Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne.

From the day I received a call from the staff nurse employed there (Jill Knapton) mam was treated with respect and given the attention she needed. The staff there are the most committed people I have ever encountered in the medical world. Jill had been called to the residential home where my mother was living to assess her challenging behaviour.

She was told that 5 days previously my mother had been found in her bed with an emergency cord wrapped about her neck, and decided that she would not be happy leaving her in the home, so arranged for her to be admitted to Castleside for round the clock observation. She stayed there for 6 weeks and during Xmas and a difficult time when the unit had to be closed as a result of an infection, she was well cared for.

I am very impressed with the staff I have met there and feel that mam was given everything she needed at the time. Jill even washed her clothing as I was ill and unable to collect it from the unit.

I have nothing but praise for them all and hope that others have the same experience at a difficult time for families.
