"Incorrect info on discharge letter"

About: St Helier Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

Oh dear. It pains me to do this again but am not impressed by the treatment my mother in law received in St Helier.

Well, that's not true, the treatment while she was in was satisfactory but having been told she needed IV antibiotics for at least ten days, she was discharged after 6 days. OK, plans change. Never mind the fact that she's still not eating!

Having been discharged four hours after being told she could go home (she had to wait for the pharmacy for all that time), she got home to look at the discharge letter which you are supposed to give to the doctor and it said she'd presented with a problem which was two days old (it has been going on now for six months) and that while she was in she had a blood transfusion (she hadn't), a colonoscopy (she hadn't) and a CT scan (she hadn't).

I seriously questioned whether they had discharged the right person. Her GP is fuming but I'm not sure there is a great deal they can do.

I wonder how long it will be before she is back in hospital with the same issue?

Thank you for letting us have feedback about the care your mother-in-law received at St Helier Hospital.

As you can imagine, I am disappointed to hear that it wasn't to the standard I would expect. In addition, I am concerned about your mother-in-law's discharge and the discharge summary.

As such, I would ask you (or, better still, your mother-in-law) to contact our patient advice and liaison service (PALS) so that they can look into the matter for you.

The PALS team can be contacted on 020 8296 2508 or via email pals@esth.nhs.uk. Further information is also available on our website: www.epsom-sthelier.nhs.uk/pals .

Once again, please accept my apologies that we have not provided your mother-in-law with the standard of care I would expect.

Pippa Hart

Director of Nursing
