"District nurses provide good care but have far too much paperwork"

About: Sunderland Teaching PCT / District nursing

(as the patient),

I was discharged from Sunderland Hospital. They told me the district nurse would come out to give me a blood thinning injection and check my wound.

The district nurse came out and asked if I would give my own injection. She said it was easy. I wasn't keen but she showed me how to do it and I said I'll try. Anyway I did try and just really couldn't. I have a bit of a needle phobia. The nurse checked my wound and filled out the paperwork which was taking over 90 mins. I was sick of her asking the same questions over and over. In the end, I was getting stressed out with all the questions and told her to leave. I wasn't being rude but just felt it was taking far too long.

I was dreading the next visit thinking it would take as long. The nurses came in every day at the same time to give me my injection. They were all nice to me. The daily visits took around 20 mins. However they spent more on the paperwork than the injection. The nurse I'd never seen before came and took my staples out very gently. This took around 20 mins. She then filled out the paperwork yet again writing everything in detail.

I can't believe all that paperwork. I was expecting the district nurse to be able to have a chat face to face. However this isn't the case. The paperwork was stressful for me as I'm normally fit and well. I think I would have been better with a simpler assessment other than a one for some much older than me. In conclusion, stop wasting time on paperwork on fit people and concentrate more on the needy.
