"A definitely positive experience!"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

What I liked

This was my second admission through the ED department who were exceptional in my care pathway in particular the doctor who listened to my fears and did not ridicule them. I was admitted as the pain relief was not being effective and I was not coping with the stress.

On arrival in the surgical assessment unit I was immediately put at ease with a comprehensive admissions checklist to ensure that I was given as rapid a relief as possible from the pain. The unit is extremely busy but this never stops the staff understanding the needs of the patients under their care and stepping in to give the best possible outcome.

There is a definite culture of patient professional partnership rather then the more adversarial one that is often found in the health community. In the absence of my own consultant I was seen by the consultant on take that night the following morning who felt it was sensible for me to remain on the unit and see my own consultant when he was available.

There has been a fairly consistent level of staffing so we knew who was going to be looking after us both day and night. I have found myself relaxing and trusting in the care setting which is not the norm for me.

It is a very friendly unit that works at a frantic pace at times but provides a very safe location when one feels at the most vulnerable.

What could be improved

The menu could have had more choice but was tasty and well presented.

Anything else?

The Royal Infirmary has its critics but as someone who is currently an inpatient awaiting surgery on 2/1/13 I feel relaxed and assured that I am in the best possible hands.

Thanks for your extremely positive commments about Leicester's Hospitals Steph! We aim to deliver 'caring at its best' so it's great to see that someone like yourself has experienced this ethos. We have passed your compliments onto the team in the Emergency Dept, who will be delighted to read your comments. We hope your surgery went well at the beginning of the month and wish you all the best for the future.
