What could be improved

My elderly father has been an in patient for last six weeks with a broken leg, and in that time has been moved to 4 different wards. There has only been 1 week when visiting has not been restricted due to the norovirus outbreak. The advice given very strongly to all visitors has been to wash hands with soap and water and to use the hand gel on entering and leaving the wards and not to visit any other wards afterwards.. This, as far as I have seen has been observed by all visitors. What I am concerned about is the lack of compliance with these rules by members of staff! My father has been moved by wheel chair to several departments including X-ray and plaster rooms and not once has the porter used the hand gel. Nor have I noticed the cleaners/catering staff using it either. No wonder the virus is almost impossible to control if these basic rules are being openly flaunted.

The hospital needs to get its act together concerning these issues.

The Trust has procedures in place during a norovirus outbreak to help prevent the spread of this highly contagious virus. This includes not moving patients from affected wards into unaffected wards, only allowing essential staff onto affected wards and not allowing staff from affected wards to then visit or work on unaffected wards.

Washing hands with soap and water is most effective during the norovirus outbreak as it washes the virus off your hands. However, it is very concerning to see your comments regarding the hand gel as good hand hygiene is expected of all staff and the alcohol gel prevents the spread of other infections.

The Infection Prevention team have link nurses on all of the wards who are responsible for auditing the ward’s hand hygiene. The results from these audits are reported to the Infection Prevention Board and if a ward’s score drops they are put on an intensive programme until their score increases. The Infection Prevention team will reiterate your comments to the link nurses to ensure that porters and cleaning staff are being challenged when they are entering and leaving the wards. This issue will also be addressed with the managers of the staff groups that you have highlighted.
