"My stay in Prince Philip hospital LLanelli"

About: Prince Philip Hospital / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I was admitted with Asthma symptoms but wasn't responding to treatment from my doctor. I had previously had a pulminary embolism and the symptoms were very similar to that so they started treating me for that just in case.

I was responding to treatment for my asthma but kept on relapsing every few days. There was no blood clot thank god. I was put on a different ward and the consultant told me he thought I was allergic to something in the hospital as I was up and down so much.

I eventually realised it was when the cleaners were on the ward I was worse. The nurses phoned to see what was in the chemicals they use and benzyl salicylate is one of the ingredients. I was already put on a salicylate free diet as the doctor thought it may be that. I was put into a room on my own to keep me away from the allergens on the ward. The cleaners came to clean my room first without any products that would make me worse.

The nurses were all fantastic making sure they weren't wearing perfume if they had to come in my room etc. I cannot praise the hospital staff enough. The care I received was second to none.

I was in hospital for 6weeks and I was still having bad reactions as the cleaning chemicals were still on people's clothes and affecting. I asked my consultant to let me go home to see if I could be more stable at home. He agreed as long as any change to my condition and I came back in. I was readmitted 2 weeks later with symptoms of my allergy and stayed another 4 days.

The hospital know now that I am better off at home even though I am still unwell as the allergens in my home are easier to control than those in hospital. Some staff didn't understand the severity of my condition on the second admission and didn't really help as much I think they thought I was over reacting but as son as I come into contact with the slightest smell of the cleaning fluid it makes me have quite severe reactions, high heart rate, high blood pressure, headaches, burning in nose mouth and throat and various other symptoms.

I am still being seen by the consultant in the hospital and he listens to me and takes on board what I have to say. The staff work so hard and have always got a smile on their face nothing is too much trouble for the staff on wards 3 and 4 of Prince Phillip hospital Llanelli and I think they deserve recognition for this.
